''Ideal for a quick getaway, Bharatpur does not require too much of planning.''

The land of migratory birds : The land here is very marshy which makes it extremely conducive for the birds and animals to come and quench their thirst. There are over 250 species of migratory birds that come here during the monsoon and winter months. However, once you enter the Keoladeo 'Ghana' Bird Sanctuary, you may not get to see as many species as expected. Often it can be a turn down as the kind of birds you see are not very rare. Nonetheless, it is a place worth visiting, specially if you have kids.

History : Located on the edges of Thar Desert, Bharatpur was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in the 18th century. It is also famous for the forts and palaces. So much so that you will get to see traces of Mughal and Rajput architecture almost everywhere. Make sure you see Lohagarh Fort here.

Travel tips : Bharatpur is one place you could just drive down any day even if you don’t happen to have any hotel reservation. You can just walk into any hotel and most likely you will find rooms. Make sure you bargain at the hotel before zeroing on. Don’t go by the hotel tariff they give you as you can even get up to a 50% discount on the rooms if you bargain well. Carry bottles of water, camera when you enter the bird sanctuary. If you are going during the winter months, wear layers of woollens coz you may have to take off a few of them while walking at the sanctuary. You get both bicycles and cycle rickshaws at the entrance. You can choose whatever you like.

Distance : About 180 kms.

How to reach : Will take you about 3 hours to reach. By train: there are direct trains from Delhi. By road: Take NH2 till Mathura. Then take a right turn for Bharatpur. It is located on NH 11
