TRIUND TREK, HIMACHAL

''Camp at night on the hill to view mesmerising sunrise and sunset. Are you game?''

It is a heavenly retreat in the Himalayas away from the maddening crowd of busy city of Delhi. It's a small approx 10 kms trek which can be done from Mcleodganj or from Daharamkot, 2kms ahead of Mcleaodganj, on some extended weekend.

LOCATION : Triund Hill is located in the foot of Dauladhar range of Himalayas in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. About 18kms from Dharamshala, Triund has become a a popular picnic and trekking spot for regular tourists of Mcleodganj.

HOW TO REACH : Reach Dharamshala which is the major town 9 km before McLeodganj via overnight bus from New Delhi. Himachal Roadways and Himachal Tourism have regular bus service from Kashmiri Gate ISBT Delhi and from Himachal Bhawan in Mandi House. Then from Mcleod market one can take an auto to the starting point of the trek called the Golu Temple, which is at the base of the ascent.

THE TREK : The tracks from Rawa, Dal Lake, Dharamkot and Bhaksunag meet at a ridge known as Galu Temple which has a small shrine and waterpoint. The trek starts easy but the gradient becomes sharper as you ascend up hill. Situated in the lap of Dhauladhar mountains, Triund gives panoramic view of the dhauladhar mountains on one side and kangra valley on the other. The trek is quite steep but is compensated by walks through the Rhododendron and Oak forests. As you start moving from Mcleodganj, the first destination will be Galu Temple and then head towards the trail to Triund. From Galu Temple, the next 5kms are steeper compared with beginning of the trek. This last stretch could be actually tiring. Overall it's an easy and enjoyable trek and is recommended even for first time goers.

STAY AT TRIUND : There are quite a few shops at Triund that serve tea, make food and rent out rooms and tents for night.Triund has a very scenic mountain lodge with a majestic view of dhauladhar ranges . Hotel Triund is also one of the stay options.

EATING OPTIONS : There are cafes such as Magic View, Scenic View & Snowline Café on the way. Instant noodles, tea, aerated drinks, mineral/purified water, biscuits, eggs and local Indian meal of a vegetable and roti are available here. But do carry your own stuff as well, especially water.

THINGS TO KNOW : -Carry some woolens
-Carry sport shoes and personal items such as towel, toiletries, slippers, medicines and first aid kit.
-One Sleeping bag, tents, stove etc (can also be arranged from Dharamshala)
-Carry as much water possible.
