Ri Kynjai Resort @ Meghalaya (Review)

''You can get a breathtakingly beautiful view of the famous Umiam Lake. A sneak peek!''

Away from the hustle bustle of Shillong (Meghalaya's capital), stands Ri Kynjai (literally meaning Serenity by the lake), a resort facing the splendid Umiam Lake. Your stay at Ri Kynjai would be more than pure luxury. It has a lot more to offer - be it food, spa or having a closer look at the awe inspiring natural beauty.

GETTING THERE : Ri Kynjai is located near Teen Khuthi bus stop and is easily accessible from all parts of the city. If you want to reach the resort from Guwahati, then you could take a cab from the airport or the railway station. A one-and-a half-hour cab ride would be all to get you to your destination. If you wish to just visit the resort from Shillong, then be prepared for a 45-minute cab ride. Buses, too, are available to the resort.

WHY GO THE DISTANCE : For those going for the first time, the driveway is adorned with little but well maintained vegetable and tea gardens which are pleasing to the eye. The interesting blend of traditional and contemporary architecture would also attract your attention as the cottage designs are inspired by the Khasi thatch huts. The architecture is in close harmony with nature that the resort is surrounded with.

What makes this resort worth a visit is the breathtaking view of the well-known Umiam Lake from the balcony of each of the cottages. These unique regally spacious cottages have fireplaces for the cold nights that Meghalaya is so familiar with. If you love the idea of an attic then the neatly polished wooden steps in your exclusive cottage would lead you to a very snug garret. The bathroom and dressing room - both spell luxury at its peak during one’s stay.

The resort also has a spa named Khem Janai where you can discover the local way of enjoying a massage. The spa has Khasi massage, herbal treatment and Khasi bathing facilities.
Sao Aiom or the ‘four seasons’ restaurant at the resort has an interesting menu for the travellers to explore. It is essentially a bar cum restaurant with the interiors decorated with crafts from across and paintings which reflect the rich culture of northeast. Speaking of the culture, it is the north eastern cuisine among others that you should look out for. Chinese would be the next best cuisine. A must try would be smoked pork with bamboo shoot – the flavours are amazing and a give a fresh experience to your taste buds.

The resort is well connected with Shillong city for you to explore other places of interest. In fact, the resort has a tie-up with the Shillong golf course and all its guests are entitled to the facilities there. So, if you are interested in golfing you can indulge in it too. Make sure you try the boat ride at Umiam Lake, which is merely 25 minutes away from the resort. For trekking, go to the legendary peaks, ‘Lumsohpetbheng’ and ‘Lumdiengiei’ which are just a few kilometres away from the resort.
