Discover USA: Land of Dreams

Rating :
''Stick to either East Coast or West Coast if on a short vacation to make most of it''

If looking for some world-class and exciting adventure this vacation, USA should top your list. Summer is the best time to appreciate beauty this country has to offer from natural wonders, cities and historic landmarks to entertainment venues.

WHY GO THE DISTANCE : It's famous for its wide array of popular tourist destinations ranging from the skyscrapers of New York and Manhattan, Disneyland of California, the Grand Canyon of Arizona to natural wonders of Yellowstone and Alaska, Casinos of Las Vegas, and warm sunny beaches of Florida, Hawaii and Southern California.
Choose your cities carefully as there are lots of places to see in the US. If you have time constraint, you must get down to choosing your destinations and we suggest you stick to either East Coast or West Coast so that you can enjoy the places you finally visit. Travelling from cities in the East Coast to West Coast can be time consuming.

NEW YORK CITY : It is the heart and soul of US with a very unique flavour. Three days in NYC is enough if it is only for sightseeing/tourism purpose. Times Square, the heart of the city is bustling throughout the day. Try and stay near or in Times Square if you are a first timer tourist. Of course if you want to mix it with social visits to friends and family, you can choose other places. You will have several choices of hotels to suit all pockets in this area.
If you are in Times Square, you can easily access Empire State Building, Madame Tussauds, the Central Bus Station among other things. Get a ticket for Hop On Hop Off bus tour or get your travel agent to book it from here.
Food is not very expensive and it is for all pockets. You can get Felafel sandwiches, salads, sandwiches, kebabs, ice creams, juices, and of course hot dogs on the street carts.
You can also choose to have food at restaurants and pubs. The pubs are kid friendly and most restaurants have separate kids’ menu. Most hotels will not offer breakfast or will charge you for it. So please check. However there is no problem if they don’t offer food, you will be spoilt for choice in NYC. Most meals come in huge quantities.
It also a good idea to see the city at night when it is illuminated. Brooklyn Bridge is a must from where you can see the illuminated city at night.

WASHINGTON : This is a city you can walk across, with wide-open avenues, front porches, old neighborhoods and river views. You have the option of taking a flight, train or bus to the capital of the US from NYC. Buses are comfortable and takes about 4-4.5 hours. Washington is very different from NYC. However, street food is not as common as NYC. You will get them in pure tourist spots and they charge a premium. You can pick up food from the supermarkets.
Again we suggest, take the Hop On Hop Off Bus tour to touch upon every point. Smithsonian Museum is a must see besides other tourist attractions which include FBI Building, Federal Triangle, Ellipse, Tidal Basin, National Archives, Washington Monument, House and Senate Office Building, U.S.Navy Memorial and Grant Memorial.
Other places that might interest you include White House, The Capitol, The Spy Museum, National Museum of Natural History, Holocaust Memorial Museum, National Air and Space Museum, United States Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian National Zoological Park, National World War II Memorial, John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, National Mall and Washington National Cathedral.

ORLANDO : If you have kids, Orlando is a must visit. You just cannot miss Disney. Stay near the Disney Parks or choose a Disney hotel if you are willing to stretch a bit. It is better to stay in one of the Disney hotels rather than other hotels which may be a little cheaper. But mind you, there may not be free drops and pick ups from the parks. If you stay in the Disney hotels, you would not have to spend on commuting to the parks. Besides, Disney hotels will offer a lot more apart from getting a chance to meet the Disney characters at ease.
If you are not staying in a Disney hotel, don’t fret too much. Ensure you are dropped off by a cab to the nearest Disney hotel from where you can take the shuttle to the park of your choice.
Magic Kingdom is the largest and though it is primarily for kids, there are separate sections in the park which offer entertainment to all and of all age groups. For several rides your waiting time could be unreasonably long.
Go for the Fast Pass. You are allowed to choose any three in the first go. They will specify the time and you have to reach the spot at the given time. You will not have to wait. After you have exhausted the three rides or meetings (with Disney characters) you are allowed one more. Every night there is a fireworks display at 10 pm. If you are not too tired you should stay back for that. There are strollers available for kids, chairs for handicapped and scooters if you do not wish to walk. You will have to pay an amount to hire them.

LAS VEGAS : There’s more in Lag Vegas than one could possibly imagine. Do not leave the place without trying your luck at casinos and dining in at some of the best restaurants, bars and night clubs. From Vegas night helicopter flights, zip lines and car racing to the Bellagio's world-famous fountains and the Mandalay Bay Beach, experiencing Las Vegas' attractions is like riding a roller coaster. Besides one can watch blockbuster shows and indulge in world class shopping in this top notch travel destination. A few restaurants that can be checked out include Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars, SW Steakhouse at the Wynn, N9NE Steakhouse at thePalms, Tom Colicchio's Craftsteak and Fiamma Trattoria & Bar at the MGM. The happy hour deals at Level 107 Lounge at Stratosphere are great and gives a spectacular view.

LOS ANGELES : Ride the Ferris wheel at Santa Monica Pier for a view of LAs mighty mountains, Griffith Park for fun activities such as pony rides, train rides and hiking, take a stroll alongside Venice canals, experience Hollywood’s Universal Studios, drive along the Pacific coast to feel the breeze, take a tour to Beverly Hills, hike Runyon Canyon and dine at The Ivy, a popular celebrity hangout here. Film buffs must visit classic attractions in the area including TCL Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Paramount Pictures, the only television and film studio left in Hollywood.

HONOLULU IN HAWAII : From pristine beaches and volcanoes to its rich South Pacific culture, Hawaii is a must visit if in the US. Experience balance trips to museums, cultural centers and the Waikiki Aquarium with relaxing rests on the stunning neighboring Waikiki beaches at Honolulu. As far as stay is concerned one can find a number of affordable hostels and community centres here. Places that may interest you include Diamond Head, USS Arizona Memorial, Iolani Palace, Hanauma Bay, Ala Moana Beach Park, USS Missouri and Honolulu Zoo.

GRAND CANYON : Located in the state of Arizona, the Grand Canyon is a top destination to visit. One must do Grand Canyon Skywalk.

SAN FRANCISCO : Place of interest here would include Golden Gate Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, world famous for its fried fish, clam chowder, and the famous San Francisco sourdough, de Young Museum that showcases American, Pacific, and African art, Chinatown known for open-air markets, souvenir shops and dumplings, Haight-Ashbury home neighborhood of the original hippies filled with vintage clothing stores, restaurants and cafes and North Beach filled with gelato shops, pizza parlors and Italian bistros.

TRAVEL TIPS : -Get a map of the Disney park you are in, right after you reach and decide on what all you want to do. It can otherwise become extremely tiring and you will get unnecessary exhausted walking and trying to get the bearings right. In June July, it is extremely hot. Carry a hat, wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Avoid carrying heavy bags.
-Tips or gratuity as it is referred to in the US is part of the culture. Keep aside an amount just for tips. Often in restaurants, the bill will specify the amount that comes in the form of tips though it is your discretion to finally pay that amount.
-Make sure you read up on the driving laws if you’re hiring a car, and keep an eye on those road signs.
