''This largest lake of Himachal in the shape of a woman’s profile is enchanting indeed''

Location : Renuka is a small lake by the Giri river in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh. Approx 300 kms from Delhi and 38 kms from Nahan town.

Why go the distance : Located at a small distance from Nahan town, Renukaji is a must visit if looking to spend quality time in the lap of nature and detach from the outside world for some time. No doubt, one gets transported to a different world altogether here which is calm and composed.

If driving from Delhi, just 10 kms ahead of Nahan town is the road which gets you to this place. The drive may have rough patches but certainly makes one feel close to the nature.

Named after goddess Renuka, the lake is shaped like a profile of a woman and is indeed a feast for the eyes. Renukaji was the wife of sage Jamadagini and mother of Parshuram, one of the ten Avtars of Lord Vishnu. Darshan at Renukaji Temple located amidst dense green forests is a must if visiting the lake. There’s a row of temples of other gods and goddesses in the same campus.

Surrounded by lush forests, boating experience on placid waters of this 2.5 km lake stretch is just awesome and breath-taking especially if going as a couple. Take a four seater if in a family or a two seater if going as couple and spend a few hours in the tranquility of this lake. What is visible from this water stretch are hills padded with dense forests that support a great variety of plant and wildlife.

One can also just sit by the lake and spot a variety of fishes and feed them with food available with vendors by the lake. You would just love it. Fresh water turtles can be spotted too. Later, take a walk around the lake and visit the zoo that boasts of lion, leopard and bears.

People throng here throughout the year to take a dip in this holy lake in a hope to have their wishes fulfilled. The place attracts maximum devotees post Diwali on the eve of Devprabodini Akadshi during a five-day long fair when Parshuram is believed to meet his mother Renukaji.

Renukaji has its own religious sanctity and people from and outside the state visit the place to pay their obeisance. The fair is packed with numerous activities and events and see trade of local produces, handicrafts and other local products are traded during the period.

Getting There : The place is well connected by road from Delhi via Panipat, Karnal, Shahpur and Nahan. The nearest rail head is at Ambala and Chandigarh with an approx. distance of 95 kms. The nearest airports are at Chandigarh and Dehradun.

Accomodation : Just astride the lake is the only hotel, ‘The Renuka’, owned and operated by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation. Prior booking via HPTDC site is must if going during peak months i.e. May and June. On spot booking is subject to availability, the probability of which is high during non-peak season.
Another option of stay is at Dadahu, 2kms before Renukaji Lake. The place houses a couple of budget hotels, ‘Devicos Plaza’ being the best among all.

Devicos Plaza address: Near Govt Hospital, Dadahu, Himachal Pradesh
Contact: 098 16 090902

Best Time To Go : Summer months could be a bit hot and humid. But monsoons and winters are quite enjoyable as the climate is pleasant in these periods.
