Khajuraho: Digging Into History

Rating :
''Unique for its temple architecture and erotic sculptures depicting Kama Sutra''

LOCATION : Located in the heart of Central India, Khajuraho is a small town in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh and is known for groups of Hindu and Jain temples.

WHY GO THE DISTANCE : The Chadela Temples of Khajuraho are a spectacular site with Vindhya hills in the backdrop. The engravings on these temples are highly sensual and erotic. It was thousand years ago that under the generous and artistic patronage of the Chandela Rajput kings of Central India, 85 temples, magnificent in form and richly carved, came up on one site, near the village of Khajuraho. However, only 22 have survived the ravages of time and remain as a collective paean to life, to joy and to creativity.

The erotic sculptures carved inside the temples may be viewed differently by different people and may form a different perception altogether when viewed in person. Some believe these sculptures were used as a form of sexual education while others believe ancient kings living in luxury used them for excitement. Hinduism that believes in efficacy of all four paths to Moksha (Dharma, Artha, Yoga, and Kama), see it as an assistance to last of these four paths. Whatever the story may be, Khajuraho temples truly depict art.

BEST TIME TO VISIT : Between October to March months when the temperature is pleasant as sightseeing requires good amount of walking.

TEMPLES SIGHTSEEING : The temples of Khajuraho are divided into three geographical groups: Western, Eastern and Southern.

The Western Group:
•Most temples belong to this group. Kandariya Mahadev - Perfectly symmetrical, it soars 31 km high. Though the four temples that stand at the corners of the main shrine are now in ruins, the main shrine has an exquisitely carved entrance arch with a multitude of themes.
•Chaunsat Yogini, the only granite temple in the Khajuraho group. Dedicated to Kali, it is also unique in being quadrangular in plan.
•Another Kali Temple (originally dedicated to Vishnu) is the Devi Jagadambe Temple.
•North of it facing eastward to the rising sun, is the Chitragupta temple, dedicated to the sun-god, Surya.
•Similar in plan to the Kandariya Mahadev is the Vishwanath Temple. Lions flank the northern steps and elephants the southern, leading up to the temple.
•Facing the shrine is a Nandi Temple with a massive 6 ft high Nandi bull.
•The boar incarnation also appears in another Vaishnavite shrine, the Varaha Temple.
•The Matangeswara Temple for example is still a place of worship. Dedicated to Shiva it has an 8 ft high lingam. South of this temple is the open air Archaeological Museum.

The Eastern Group:
•Hindu and Jain temples make up the Eastern Group. The largest Jain temple, Parswanath, is in this group.
•The other Jain temple is the Ghantai Temple. Though almost in ruins now, it still bears evidence of its original splendour
•North of Parswanatha is the more modestly sized Adinatha Temple.
•The three Hindu temples are the Brahma, Vamana and Javari Temples.

The Southern Group:
•The fine Chaturbhuj Temple has a massive intricately carved image of Vishnu in the sanctum.
•Duladeo Temple is a little away from the road to the Jain group of temples.

THE LIGHT AND SOUND SHOW : The show tells life and times of the great Chandela Kings and traces the story of the unique temples from the 10th Century to the present day. The 50-minute show runs in Hindi and in English every evening. Amitabh Bachchan, the Indian super star, narrates the story of Khajuraho in his mesmerising voice.
Timings of Sound & Light Show at Western group of temples: English: 06:30 pm to 07:25 pm. Hindi: 07:40 pm to 08:35 pm.
Entry fees: Foreign Adult: Rs 350/- Foreign child: Rs 200/- Indian Adult: Rs 120/- Indian Child: Rs 60/-

EXCURSIONS : Panna National Park: The so called Gharial Haven is situated just 25 kms away from Khajuraho.

Pandav Falls: Located on Panna Road, these falls are around 34 km away from Khajuraho. They make an excellent scenic spot for the tourists.

Raneh Falls: Located at around 20 km away from Khajuraho. Like Pandav falls even these make a beautiful picnic spot and birdwatching on River Ken.

Orchha : The lovely, deserted, 16th century royal capital.

GETTING THERE : By Air
There are regular flights from Delhi to Khajuraho airport, which is 5 kms from the main city.

By Rail
Khajuraho has its own rail head. Apart from that, the other nearest railheads are Mahoba (64 km) and Harpalpur (94 km). Taking a train to Jhansi Railway Station by train and then hiring a taxi for Khajuraho isn’t a bad option either.

By Road
Khajuraho is connected by regular bus services with Mahoba, Harpalpur, Satna, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra, Jabalpur & Bhopal.
