DHANAULTI IN UTTARAKHAND

''A quaint hill station being less cluttered is gaining popularity as a weekend getaway''

LOCATION : It is located on Mussoorie-Chamba road in the Tehri district of Uttarakhand.

WHY GO THE DISTANCE : Mussoorie being crowded especially during peak season, tourists have increasingly started making their way towards Dhanaulti to relax and rejuvenate. Located amidst thick pine, cedar, and rhododendron forests, it’s a quiet and quaint place unlike other hill stations and remains untouched so far. Don’t expect too much from the place if seeking adventure and fun time as the place is not much commercialised yet. This area is also a rich fruit belt with lush orchards of apple, apricots, walnut and plums. People here are simple and very welcoming too. A perfect destination for families and corporate groups looking forward to a recreational holiday. One can also explore numerous hikes around the hill town and even consider an overnight excursion to Nag Tibba.

SIGHTSEEING : Surkhanda Devi: The temple dedicated to the Goddess Parvati is 9 kms from Dhanaulti.

Deogarh Fort: Built in the 16th century comprises ornamented palace and Jain temples.

Eco Park: The latest additions to this beautiful place are two eco parks Amber and Dhara that have been developed by the forest department of Uttarakhand in assistance with the local community.

Matatila Dam: Offers panoramic views and an ideal spot for picnic.

Barehipani & Joranda Falls: These two popular falls are located in the heart of Simlipal National Park near Dhanaulti.

Potato Farm: Owned by the government and a popular sunrise point too.

Dashavatar Temple: A lord Vishnu’s temple built during Gupta regime.

BEST TIME TO VISIT : The place offers good weather throughout the year and can be visited anytime during the year. A perfect getaway if, looking to beat the heat in summers. In winters the place is covered with snow but can still be visited easily. The place gives a splendid view of snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

EATING/STAY : The place unfortunately has a dearth of good eating joints and accommodation. Many tourists usually make an excursion from Mussoorie to this place in the morning and try getting back in the evening. But a few lodging options have come up in the recent past especially in Dhanaulti and nearby places such as Jwarna, Kanatal and Chamba. There are small kiosks and dhabas serving maggi, buns, tea and some other small stuff here. Good food, however, is available only at nearby resorts and hotels, which are small in number.

SHOPPING : Hand-made woollen stuff such as scarfs, stoles, socks and shawls can be purchased here. Offlate, packaged organic food items has started gaining popularity in the place.

GETTING THERE : Easily accessible by road from Delhi. Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun, 82 kilometers away, is the closest. Dehradun has the closest rail head, 66 kilometers away from Dhanaulti.
