''An elaborated list of sights that adventure seekers would love to explore''

Winter sports are prominent in the northern states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.

KASHMIR : 1. GULMARG: This part of Kashmir valley offers some of the best slopes for Skiing, which usually begins around early December and goes on till the end of March.
• Skiing coaching classes are also conducted here in winters.
• Equipment such as skis, sticks, snow boots, woollen socks, mufflers, windproof jackets, goggles, caps and other equipment are available on rent here.
• One can also for Tobogganing, wherein a flat wooden board is taken up the hill and is allowed to descend downhill. It’s easy and doesn't require any prior skill or practice.
• Heli-skiing is also an option for adventure lovers, which is basically a downhill skiing or snowboarding that is accessed by a helicopter.
• Snow scooter are also available here for hire.

2. PAHALGAM: Is the other option for Skiing in Kashmir valley.
• Pahalgam (Aru) is popular for ice-skating, ice hockey and cross country skiing.
• The Jawahar Institute of Mountaneering and Winter Sports offers skiing courses to amateurs here.
• The best time to visit Pahalgam/Aru for skiing is between December and March.

HIMACHAL PRADESH : 1. MANALI: Solang Valley at 12 Kms from Manali is emerging as the adventure sports capital of Himachal Pradesh.
• One can be a part of Winter Carnival organised here every winters that involves a host of cultural events and sports competition.
• Bhrigu peaks and slopes near Hamta Pass are the best slopes in the world for heliskiing.
• Ski slopes of Solang Nala are famous for winter sports.
• Manali too offers basic and advance skiing courses.
• One can also try Snow-Boarding too wherein one gets onto a flat board and do snow surfing.
• Snow-scooter rides are available here too.

2. KUFRI: A small hill station located in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. It is about 15 kms from Shimla.
• Mahasu Ridge, just above Kufri is this slope famous for skiing.
• Here too courses are organised by the Himachal Tourism for the tourists to learn skiing.
• An annual winter sports festival is organized every year in the month of February where skiing enthusiasts and adventure seekers come in large numbers.
• One can also try Tobogganing (sliding down the hill on a sledge)

3. NARKANDA: Located 64kms from Shimla, in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Good for beginnings in skiing.
• HPDC conducts skiing courses here every year.
• Famous for skiing, angling and several winter sports.
• The skiing season starts in January and lasts till first week of April.

4. SHIMLA: A hill station in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
• One of the best places to try out ice skating. In fact a sports festival is held there every winter.
• A highly popular skiing destination too.

UTTARAKHAND : •AULI: A small town in the state of Uttarakhand. Nearest airport is Dehradun which is about 300 kms away from Auli. Being a popular skiing destination, Auli is well connected through roads. The town is very popular for skiing.

•DYARA BUGYAL: Situated in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, known for proffering excellent skiing opportunity.

•MUNDALI: Situated in Dehradun district and at a short distance from Chakrata, this skiing destination in India is known for its steep gradients. There is a ski school that provides all the necessary ski gears and training.

•MUNSYARI: For skiing and trekking.

NORTH EAST : 1. ZIRO: About 150 km from Itanagar in the northeast and a popular spot for organising a winter tent or camp.

2. SIKKIM:
• PHUNI VALLEY: The picturesque Phuni Valley located 18 km ahead of Lachung and the Yumthang Valley, serves as the skiing centre.
•YUMTHANG VALLEY: A perfect site for trekking and skiing.
