Dhauli-Kalinga Mahotsav: Orissa

''Platform for Martial Dance - a blend of martial art postures and graceful dance forms''

Scores of national and international artists come together under one roof in Bhubaneswar at the Dhauli-Kalinga Mahotsav, a festival of martial dances, aimed at promoting Odisha state's culture and heritage. This festival is a unique outlet and a great medium to create awareness about different martial art forms amongst the masses.

WHEN : December 10-14, 2014.

WHERE : At Shanti Stupa/Peace Pagoda, Dhauli Hill, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Orissa. Dhauli hill is an important Buddhist tourist destination too.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL : 'Dhauli-Kalinga Mahotsav' has been happening for last nine years. It is an annual event that showcases enchanting classical and contemporary items aimed at promoting Odisha state's culture and heritage. It is organised by the department of tourism, Government of Odisha and Orissa Dance Academy, as a medium to bring together the traditional martial art forms of India under one roof.

With the giant white Peace Pagoda as the backdrop, the expert martial dancers exhibit incredible postures of aggression, defense and escape with a grace, par imagination. As one observes these stunning movements in front of the magnificent Buddhist monument under a starry sky, memories of the ancient Kalinga War which had led to the miraculous transformation of Emperor Ashoka become alive.

While the martial dancers thrill the audience with their rhythm and precision of movement, the Dhauli Stupa stands still delivering a message loud and clear that ‘peace reigns supreme’.

GETTING THERE : Located about 8 kms towards south of Bhubaneswar, one can reach Dhauli Hills by bus, autorickshaw or a taxi.
