Vivekananda Rock Memorial: Kanyakumari

''Located at confluence of three water bodies – Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian sea.''

LOCATION : It is located at Southern-most tip of India at Vavathurai in Kanyakumari in the state of Tamil Nadu.

ABOUT THE MONUMENT : This is one of those peaceful destinations in India, which one would surely want to revisit. Pay homage to the shrine and also avail the opportunity to meditate at the location that is full of history and spirituality. The memorial has two structures in its precincts - Vivekananda Mandapam and Sripada Mandapam on two rocks facing each other. More than a million people every year pay homage at this architectural marvel.

It was here, after wandering across the length and breadth of India, that Swami Vivekananda meditated and attained enlightenment and henceforth became a reformer and philosopher. To get answers to questions raging in his mind, he dived into the sea and swam across to reach a holy rock in mid-sea, the very last bit of Indian land.

In the honour of this spiritual teacher, prophet and patriot-monk of modern India, a memorial was constructed on the rock in 1970. In order to further spread the knowledge and make people understand Swami Vivekananda’s vision for the upliftment of India, Vivekanand Kendra was established adjacent to the memorial.

Follow the landmarks to ensure you see the entire place. There is also a bookshop where one can purchase various books on Swami Vivekananda, his Guru Shri Ramakrishna and Sarada Devi in various regional languages. This monument must be in priority list if visiting Kanyakumari.

GETTING THERE : One can reach Kanyakumari by air, rail and road. The nearest airport is at Trivandrum/Thiruvananthapuram about 85 kms from Kanyakumari. Almost all major cities of South India are connected to Kanyakumari by bus, train and taxi services. Reaching the memorial too isn't a problem as there are ferries connecting rock island to the mainland. Ferry ride lasts for about ten minutes but is a great experience in itself especially when it’s approaching the monument.

BEST TIME : The months from October to February are ideal considering the hot and humid climate of South India in summers. Walking bare feet on the rock is not possible in summers when the sun is way too harsh.
