Switzerland Of India: Auli

''One of Asia's finest ski resorts, Auli’s steep slopes attracts adventure junkies in large numbers''

Also called the Switzerland of India, Auli is an ideal holiday destination in any season. Auli sits in the lap of Himalayas and is blessed with the abundance of natural beauty. In summer, it’s an ideal retreat to escape the scorching heat of plains while trekking and skiing in the hilly terrains add fun to the trip in winters. Auli is surrounded by high peaks like Mana, Kamet and tallest of all Nanda Devi.

THINGS TO DO : • In winters, tourists can indulge in skiing in the snow-bedded land of Auli. Auli is known for its enthralling ski resorts. Just get hold of a ski board and get kicking! For serious skiing enthusiasts, the system of ski lift has also been put in place, which makes it easier to reach the top. If an amateur, you can always take up a short course in skiing run by the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN).
• Trishul Peak is one of the ski-friendly ranges of Auli. Trishul Mountains forms the south-east corner of the ring of peaks encircling the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.

• The choice of temples is no less in Auli. During the time when the temple of Badrinath is closed, the deity of Lord Badri Vishal rests at Joshimath, close to Auli. You can always pay homage at this temple. Then, there is Human temple which is believed to have been the resting ground for Lord Hanuman when he was on his way to pick the sanjivani to save Laxman’s life. Sankaracharya Tapastali is another prominent attraction in Joshimath.
• The artificial lake in Auli is one of the world’s highest man-made lakes. This Lake was developed by the government in view of creating artificial snow on the new ski slopes at the time of low snow fall. Water from the lake is used to feed the snow guns stationed in the ski slopes.
• Auli is also a land of meadows. About 3 kms from Auli is the famous Gurso Bugyal, which is at its best in Spring. During the season, the land transforms into a lush green carpeted pasture, which is indeed a breath-taking sight. You’ll be awestruck to see the beauty of surrounding forests of conifers and oak that adds to the charm and beauty of this place. The place also gives a panoramic view of the lofty Himalayan peaks.
