Kapla: Ancient Capital of Kinners of Kinnaur

''Kalpa was the headquarters of the Kinnaur region till Rekong Peo donned the mantle''

If beauty and nature is all you want to be surrounded with on your next holiday, head to Kalpa in Himachal. This beautiful, quaint village is reached by a winding 7 km road up through pine woods and apple orchards from Rekong Peo. The village gives an expansive view of the snowy peaks of Kinnaur Kailash range that emit crimson and golden light as the early morning sun rays kiss them. These rugged mountains rising dramatically from the riverbanks render tourists speechless and awestruck. The sight is absolutely stunning and breathtaking.

LOCATION : Kalpa is a small village situated in Reckong Peo district of Himachal Pradesh, India.

• The key attractions in Kapla are the Narayan-Nagini temple and Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar monastery that is believed to be over a thousand-year-old. You have to walk through the narrow lanes of the village to reach the temple and monastery.

• Those with a religious bent of mind must plan kothi that has an ancient temple dedicated to goddess Chanadika Devi. It is set against the backdrop of mountains and graves of deodar.

• Visit the lesser known Sangla Valley, which is about a few kms from Kalpa towards Karchham. From Karchham, there’s a diversion for Sangla Valley and Chitkul. The landscapes of Sangla Valley will surely cast a spell on you.

• You can also do Kamru Fort that is at a distance of 2 km from Sangla. The architecture of Kamru Fort resembles that of the Bhima Kali complex and is believed to the origin of rulers of Bushehar.

• Chitkul is the last village in Sangla Valley of Himachal and beyond lies Tibet.

Kapla is situated about 250 kms from Shimla on National Highway-22 via Rampur. There is no direct train or a flight for Kalpa or Reckong Peo. You can reach this place only by public buses or private vehicles. The closest rail-head to Kalpa is Kalka, from where you can either board a bus or hire a cab.
